I haven't cried as much as I did reading Scruffy's story in a long time. To the owners of the now deceased Scruffy, I hope you sleep with the torment of your own consciousness wearing you down to the point that your own lives becoming pointless. Rest in peace, Scruffy, we will miss you, your story will not be forgotten. That's one promise we CAN make you.
Alexandra Saint-John

If tears were food you would be the well-fed dear horse you should have been.

This morning on Houston animal rescue I saw a story on a 18 month old colt who was in Scruffys condition.....He went down infront of the cameras and was PTS.....I was involved in horse rescue and came across to many horses like poor Scruffy..The IDIOT owners who do this to gods most beautiful creation need to be educated with a lump of 4x2 around the ears ! BARSTEDS..AS for tossas who stick up for horse abusers they need to be kicked up the bum until their noses bleed..I have heard all the bullshit excuses for having a horse in this appauling condition. If a horse can't be helped anymore you PUT THEM TO SLEEP! Any decent person would not let a horse get into Scruffys condition.I have taken in 14 rescues in my time and all came good with some TLC which poor Scruffy NEVER had. My horses eat before me.

It was Scruffy who first drew me to a small horse rescue all those years ago. Such a beautiful boy did not deserve to die in a drain on the side of the road..As for the TURDS who did this I hope you ROT IN HELL..Fly free in Heaven Scruffy ,you will not be forgotten sweet angel..

Harry...Triple H.

i can't believe what happened to him came from the actions and thoughts of the "smartest" species on earth. no animal should go through what he did. as far as i can see, there are 3 people to blame, his owner, for letting him get to such a state, her family/friends, for not doing anything about it, and any other members of their community who may have seen this horse, because they didn't do anything about it either. his owner and those who knew about it deserve the same fate. haven't they heard the saying "treat others the way you want to be treated", that saying should go for animals aswell as humans. sometimes i am ashamed of being a human. these animals put up with all of our shit and this is what they get.

It disgusts me that anyone can treat a horse like this. Unfortunatley there is an eight year old pony named Kyle at the stables where I work who is often neglected, so I tend to look after him. He is never groomed properly, always needs mucking out, and I have only seen him outside his stable twice in about two months. I could never ride him, as he is too small, but one day I am going to buy him and treat him properly.

The fact that Scruffy was treated like that and they then accused you of not seeing the other side of the story makes me sick. There is no other side, unless they are idiots who enjoy seeing animals in pain.

Scruffy looked to be a lovely horse who I, personally, would not have minded having as my own. I'm doing all I can to prevent this from happening to Kyle.

how sad, it happens all the time though.it breaks my heart.i have 3 very big babies of my own and i cannot imagine intentionally not feeding them.all i know is that the bible says that god knows every sparrow that falls, and to be good to the dumb animals.that to me means i would not like to be in the shoes of the people who have mistreated their animals.its a disgrace and i have a little peace knowing that one day god will say, hey, why did u do that for?rip pretty boy;(

Heartbreaking evidence of a world gone wrong.

Scruffy ... i am so sorry : (

Where do you start, this is wrong on so many levels. If an owner is to act in this way, hand the horse over to someone, who will show love, care and passion for this gorgeous animal.

Scruffy hunni, so sorry, that us humans are 'SO CARELESS' and LET YOU DOWN. But just know this hunni, we love you and your in a better place now, then here.

As a horse owner myself, i can be bias, scuffy's eyes tell the whole story, as far as i'm concerned, there is no OTHER side of the story.

Meg x

Hi OMG!!! This poor Horse what did he ever do to desirve this i mean who could to this to a horse who looked so lovely..

i dint even no him but if i did he wouldnt be like that.

FROM KELLY

R.I.P SCRUFFY

What person who would call themselves a 'horse lover' would do this to him?? I have never seen a horse that badly abused!! Scruffy,I'm soooooo soooorrry that someone responsible couldn't get to you in time.R.I.P Scruffy! I hope you fly with angels now!

I am reading this with a breaking heart and tears streaming - every living creature whom we take into our custody deserves our every care and concern - there are no excuses - there are no reasonable reasons. Transporting a horse in this condition is reprehensible - he trusted you to do the right thing - he had no choice - you did, and you have failed. What breaks my heart even further are the billions of animals every day suffering under the yoke of man's cruelty - Go to PETA website and view - If slaughterhouses had glass walls - to see what I mean - Scruffy may your next life be blessed.

Again, I am not Scruffy's owner but do know the owner.

Did you ever wonder wny Sruffy had such a good coat?

Rebecca: No, it was evening when these pictures were taken, and the shine was from the camera flash.

Did you check his teeth?

His teeth were all broken and some coming out of his mouth.

He was owned by well-meaning but not very knowledgeable people.

He had been owned by the same people for many, many years.

Yes, we know that as the friend I was with grew up on a neighbouring property, and there are messages on this board from locals in the area in which he lived.

He was fully hard fed - notice the nice sheen to his coat.

Whether or not this is accurate, it does not justify his condition. His owner has been reported for neglecting her horses on previous occasions by locals.

Over the past few months he lost a lot of weight despite being fed.

Well quite obviously, the treating Vet, (if there was one), needed to advise appropriately, and anyone else who had contact with Scruffy and his owners needed to step in and take charge of the situation. Either assist the owner, or remove the horse to better circumstances.

The plan was to move him to a property with good pasture.

All good.

No, not at all good. Apart from the fact that it's illegal to move a horse in the condition in which Scruffy was, it's also incredibly cruel to expect an aged emaciated horse to be able to tolerate such a long float trip.

The problems were inappropriate diet for a horse with no useful teeth!

If he had no useful teeth, how on earth was moving him to a property with "good pasture" going to help him regain some condition?

When queried regarding the dentist, I was told that the dentist had said "There was nothing to do."

To the owner it was interpreted as 'no work required'.

What the dentist mean't was  'there are no teeth worth working on.'

A more experienced person would have questioned the dentist further.

You are obviously very close to the situation in some way. All I can say is that if you were involved with Scruffy/the owners in some way, prior to this tragedy, then you are probably, very understandably, feeling very guilty for not having done more and feel the need to defend the actions they took/didn't take. If you became involved after the event, then all I can say is that you weren't there, and you are relying on information being fed to you from those who have an interest in defending themselves.

A more experienced person woud have fed him a mush of pellets or realised it was time to say goodbye.

You don't need to have experience in order to have humanity. Lack of experience was only the secondary problem here.

Scruffy appeared bright and 'ate' the chaffs andconcentrates offered to him.

I'll bet he did!! He was starving!

It is awful what happened with Scruffy, but it is as awful as to what happened to the people who thought they were helping him.

How on earth can you equate the two!!??? Scruffy had no choices, the humans responsible for his care did. I was there. I witnessed the absolute lack of compassion expressed by the owners son and his partner, as did the other concerned parties present. It was disgusting.

Did anybody ever make an attempt to explain to these people what had happened; to educate them?

Yes, but they were just like you. Determined only to defend themselves, and not see the situation for what it was.

Not a thing, just villlification.

Not nearly enough as far as I'm concerned.

The deserved some compassion. Are you for real???? It was a case of 'neglect' by ignorance not by lack of caring or interest.

Come onnn ...my daughter was 6 yrs old at the time. She cried upon seeing the photos of Scruffy. Her heart broke for his suffering. Any idiot could see that he seriously needed help, whether they were "ignorant" or otherwise. These people obviously did not seek the help he needed, which was also apparent when a Vet offered to travel to the scene approximately 4 hrs before we arrived, upon receiving a call from a distressed passer by who had stopped. The owners son declined the offer.

Is there any attempt made now to help people and educate people with horses?

Well yes. I subsequently founded a welfare organisation, not for profit charity TREW, which has since done an immense amount of good work since, including taking in horses who are in dire circumstances, from owners who are struggling with providing appropriate care, and providing education through a mobile 'Education Unit' which was established via a grant received.

Julie Meerman

I don't know your exact involvement here Julie, but you obviously feel quite passionate about this, as I remember your emails at the time, and your posts on forums. Whatever you are trying to justify in your own mind must trouble you, for you to take the time to send another message three years down the track. I think it's time you let go of it, and we all move on and try to do what we can using the lessons learned. It's the closest we can get to making things right by Scruffy. I don't have the time to debate it anymore. It achieves nothing, and the facts speak for themselves.

The story of Scruffy and so many of his equine friends who suffer the same ill fate, is truly distressing. To have a horse in our lives is a privelidge, NOT a right. We never own them. They are free spirits who live amongst us and willingly give unconditional love and companionship. They ask for nothing in return, except to be cared for and loved as any kind living soul deserves. Those of us who know and understand this, are the only ones who have earned the right to have them in our lives.

Jennie xox

Why on earth are people so so cruel. They give us so much love .Its just heart breaking to no what scruffy went through. We wait to long before we help these poor beggers. Please if you see an animal in your travel needing help don;t leave it for the next person they may not do anything.

Hi, I have just read Scruffy's story. It made me think of a horse I RESCUED once. I was looking to buy  a pony for my son, and was told that a so-called "well respected" riding school, may have had some horses for sale.

On making the call to find out what they had available, I was told to come out and see ****! "He knows what's over there." When I arrived,  ****! advised me that he never knew we were coming and had to go over the hill to get them. The young guy at the stables advised us that he might be gone a while, as they we over on death hill, the place they were taken to, to just die. No dignity or respect whatsoever for the years of service they had provided. This moved me so badly, that I decided I would wait as long as necessary.

On returning he had three brown/ bays, 2 geldings and 1 mare. They were so poor that the walk back had them totally exhausted. He explained to me the mare (Stock horse X) was Baby Doll she was very aged had been there for the 8 years that ****! had, and was "Retired", the larger (TB type) gelding, again was aged, had been there 6 years, and the smaller (stockhorse X) gelding was named "Champ" had been there for at least 10 years or more. Now Champ in particular was labelled that because no matter who the rider the horse always gave his best. The horse carted many a tourist through rocky hills and hard tracks without objection. These horses had earned money for the owners day in day out for years. And they were left in this appalling condition, as a THANKS for the years of wervice. The price they were asking for these horses was rediculous considering they had basically been abondoned.

I managed to find people willing to buy the larger gelding and mare, as I had decided that Champ was coming home with me. To cut  a long story short, the mare and gelding, after a careful feeding program, love and general maintenance,  went on to give many years of fun to beginner riders at Pony Club.

Champ was an angel to me, after returning him to his former glory, he gave my son the best horse a child could ever wish for. He was so trustworthy, and reliable. We only had him a couple of years.

Unfortunately Champ got colic one morning, surgery being our only option, I decided he had suffered enough,  with his age he may not survive, and that I managed to give him back some love, peace and happiness, in his last years, instead of being left to die on the side of a steep hill, with no food, (it would not have taken long).

THESE SORT OF PEOPLE NEED STAKING OUT IN THE COLD, AND NOT FED, OR MAYBE WORKED LIKE SLAVES, THEN RETURNED TO THE PADDOCK, UNCARED FOR.

I choose not to air any further feelings on these people, I Should have reported them, but as a Business owner, it can be very difficult. So instead, I managed to save not just one but three very sweet horses & GIVE THEM BACK THEIR DIGNITY.

These places need to be monitored more closely, and have certain limitations in place. That rule also needs to be applied for anyone involved with any animal.

Owning an animal, and it loving you back is a PRIVILEGE, there needs to be some sort of test required to own an animal.

Keep up your work and don't be afraid to step on toes, these people are BULLIES, only to a helpless animal, because a person might fight back........................

Run free little spirit and know you will always in our hearts and loved. R.I.P Scruffy, This story brough tears and as a rider and owner of horses I find it appalling that someone could even think of doing this to such a nobel animal.  I have seen so many horses in need, it is sad that as people we are here to care for our fellow souls, not hurt them or let them be hurt, keep up the good work to thosewho would help to prevent this cruelty.  Thankyou for bringing everyone Scruff's story....I will never forget.

This is the saddest thing I have ever seen, What is so diffrent from animals than humans they have feelings thoughts and living rights so why a horse as fine as this should have been punished like that is completly unexceptible, I have 4 horses two of witch I addopted from a abuse santuary, They take in animals who are unwanted or abused. There are many  more horses like Scruffy out there and Im sure that Scruffy would want us to help them. There for I strongly reccomend addopting a horse from Big sky Ranch Or making a donation as they relie on them to feed and care for the animals. there wbsite is www.bigskyranch.ca Thanks Lauren.

I Have Had Horses Before & Have Been Riding Since I Was 5, They Are Such Lovable And Affectionate Animals It Makes Me Physically Sick & So Bloody Angry That People Can Treat Them Like This, To The Point Of Death Is Jus Ridiculous. If Anyone Had Treated Any Of My Horses Like That If I Was Absent I Would Have Attacked Them, Phyically! It Is Unacceptable That Scruffy Was Treated This Way, Its Damn Right Out Of Order. His Owners Should Be Severly Punished.

So , so sad, scruffy l'm sure you are in a much much nicer place now, where you can frolick in the sun painfree and where the grass is rich and plenty-full. l pray you are so happy that you have forgotton your past,     RIP           Raelene.

Well all i can say really is the owner should be ashamed..no not ashaned he should feel a lot worse how can people live when they starve animals so badly that they have the worst life possible?? You did a good at least Scruffy got someone to care for him.. even if it was only for a little while!!

You are a very strong person! .. If i was there i would have shot the owner or who ever was traveling it.. how can you travel a horse in that state let alone let the poor thing get into a state like that in the first place!!

Well i think thats my mad rage over. Scruffy hope you have finally found happyness up there away from people who don't care!! I just wish you coud have seen the way the world is for horses who are loved..you would of been the best most stunning looking horse in miles! xxxx

Dear dear Scruffy,

I'm writing this through my tear filled eyes, what a  wonderful horse you must have been to have been able to survive this terrible lack of love and care, my heart breaks thinking of the appalling neglect you suffered.

If only some decent horse lover could have known of your plight and been able to help you before you suffered this gross injustice.

Scruffy  on your behalf I want to say thank you to these wonderful people who helped you in your final sad hours and ended your suffering.

I'm now going outside to my 5 horses to give them all an extra hug gor the day and tell them once again how much I appreciate the years of unconditional love and joy they have given me.

May your soul  Rest In Peace.

Kerry Gaffiero

i am not a specific horse lover..but i DO love animals in general...including horses...and i DO believe that they should be treated better.....

pets and animals should be checked at least once a year, in my opinion, by a governments agent, to ensure a good and healthy living that that animal deserves.

2009 and still no change in cruelty laws... still no change in human wars... maybe we have become imune to suffering?? mankind will only stop cruelty to animals when they can love themselves enough to be kind to other humans. you cannot expect such evolution in just a few thousand years! you dont need a liscence to breed humans, how are you going to get a liscence to restrict breeding animals?? i've rescued horses over the past 30 years and enjoy watching them go to good homes, unfortunately i've also watched them go to idots that learn that the smartest thing they can do is sell the horse on to a better place. scruffy is one of too many horses bred for no good reason than "to say i've bred a foal!" aren't i clever?? for every human in Australia there are 100,000 horses?? stop breeding for the sake of it. R.I.P. Scruffy and all my old friends who have gone onto the elysian fields.

Karen, Brisbane

Heart broken, tears flowing... thank God we stick our noses into other people's paddocks when we see bad things happening.

HI Rebecca, i thought i was going to be sick when i saw those photos. i dont know how anyone could ever do that to an animal. i still now have chills up my spine from that story, i would always do everything i can to help any animal let alone a horse there just so beautiful. so so sorry. Kara

i think u done right as this is something that u believe in and i am one person that appreciates what u have done for this horse he did not deserve this kind of treatment no horse does they have been domesticated because of us the least we could do is treat them with some love care and food not in the harsh way that scruffy was not everyone would have the guts to do what you've done but i think you've done a good thing and would just like to say thank you From Tracy xXx

i find it hard to put into words how I am feeling - how such a beautiful animal could be put through such neglect.

I believe in Kharma - that is all I will say in regards those who put him through obvious suffering.

RIP little one - I'm sure my two boys (Devon & Corny) who passed in the last couple of years will take care of you.

- Allison

that made me feel so sick.how could anybody do such a thing.poor scruffy, what a brave little horse he was to survive all those years of cruelty.and how sad is it.... knowing he had too. how can people be so cruel.

Sue

Hey, I'm Clio in England. I'm devastated to read your story. I've got 4 horses and if I ever had to sell one, I 'd make sure it was to someone who cares. I can't imagine what I'd do if I knew that my horses had met that fate.

Even if the owner hasn't got feelings, that doesn't mean that the horses don't.

Horses have served us well over the ages, why can't everyone treat them with the respect they deserve?

SCRUFFY I LUV U!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was so moved by Sruffy's page that I wrote to the priminister to ask him to make it STOP. I was weeping hard, for there could never be a horse that sounds so much like Black Beauty. I felt horrible as I read his page, thankyou for writing it.

Hello, I'm Debra in NY, NY and I'm so saddened by Scruffy's story. I love horses. I hate that he, and so many others, live in such bad conditions. Blessings Scruffy, you were a beautiful creature.

IM SOOO SAD!!! ITS SO TOUCHING i feel really bad for you

I'm trully apalled. How could anyone, horse lover or not, ever let an animal get to this condition? It goes further then just animal neglect, a person who could do this is simply not human.

I work at an equestrian centre and have seem some bad cases, but never anything this appaling. But I have seen what the tiniest bit of neglect can do and neglect/abuse needs to be stopped. I'd feel terrible enough raising a hand against a horse, let alone starving it to death.

This is disgusting... It's time people woke up to the abuse and neglect in this world.

Dear Scruffy, I am devastated by your story and can never agree with anyone who does not idolise their equine friend. I hope that your angels take care of you in a very special way as you are  very very special.

Shelley

oh my goodness. I feel so sorry for that horse. Scruff should surely be remembered. R.I.P. Scruff. Scruff i bet was a wonderful horse. Just a shame he had to suffer before dying.

I just wish that this horrid human race would realise that if they don't have the funds or time for a animal that puts all it's trust and loyalty into them they should not have the animal.

In Scuffy's case I deem the owner heartless and bloody selfish. They should be subjected to the same cruelty. Some people may find that hard to swollow but I'm sorry I work in the verterinary industry and I have seen to much over my lifetime.
Gerri

hey im lizzy, im 16 from the UK,
scruffy,
your story has got me in tears,
both angry tears and saddened tears,
you were a gorgeous, very handsome creature,
and whoever did this to you deserves a worse fate than i can even put into words at the present time,
i know im only 16, but if i could go back in time i swear i would,
and i would put them through torture unimaginable,
purely so that they know how u felt,
i can only hope that the angels are looking after you up there in heaven,
p.s--> save me a spot on ur little cloud sweetheart <3 :'(
in our thoughts and hearts always
xxxxx

hi i just read your page and it is the most touching story I have ever heard. I just maby 11 but i feel as if it was my horse that died no i dont have one but i had a cat that suffered with hunger cause it wouldn't eat so we had to force feed it but it turned out to be no use

I am writing this with tears in my eye's after reading about Scruffy and sorry he had to go through this, as no animal should know abuse .

I think any abuser's may it be animal's or human's should be put in jail for good and never see the light of day again.

I am going to think about Scruffy tonight when I go see my horse and give my horse a great big hug and one for Scruffy too.

Janie Raven

Scruffy you really did matter! To me and to all who love and adore equines! I am soooo sad you did not have a good home and kind hands to soothe your lot in life. I only pray that angels rest upon the rest of all the Scruffys still out there in this world who suffer at the hands of ignorant and abusive owners. May many humans take up Scruffy's torch and carry it for him---light the path for other Scruffy's to see their way to freedom from a horrible life. If only I could have had you Scruffy! I know you are playing at the foot of the Rainbow Bridge.

I just purchased a sad, sad dun gelding yesterday who when delivered to me--was very, very thin. I was apalled at his condition---the girl and her boyfriend who delivered him to me---claimed to know nothing about the horse! These people said he was ridden a week ago to sort cattle---how awful! I dare not lay a saddle on his back as his withers and hip bones show all too well to carry such a load.

I cannot believe how terrible and horrible humans can be.  There are some good humans out there--but the ugly, ignorant, abusive humans are far too many.  If anyone reads Scruffy's story here --- I don't care how small an effort ---just put forth an effort to save one animal from an ending such as Scruffy had to endure.  To be hauled in the shape he was in-----my heart is truly broken -- I am going home tonight and give my new dun fellow a good brushing and I will tell him of Scruffy's plight as I brush and brush---if only I could save each and every poor animal soul from such a demise----how awful for Scruffy to live every minute like he had to.  My prayers are for all of you read this story and see the pictures of Scruffy---may Scruffy touch your heart and live within your soul so that you are moved to take action---no matter how small an action--but that you DO something to move Scruffy's story ahead!!!

Scruffy -- may you run free and your spirit full and bursting with happiness!!!! We care about you fella and we love you--- please be an angel for all the abused and neglected horses out there. Touch their souls and ease their pain if even for a few minutes each day. The love you had to give went to heaven with you and now you can share with others. Scruffy's love!!!! IF only we would have known!

Bless the maker of this website and may we all join forces to advance the cause of easing suffering in the equine world!

Becky from Kansas

hiya,

well about 12 months ago I think I put post on here about how touched I was about scruffy's story and that my partner and I were about to get 15 acres and wanted to call it scruffys. We decided against that as it just made up too sad. We decided that the name was going to start with "s" in memory of scruffy. We are now called "saltbush lodge. Scruffy inspired us and to date we have saved four horses. Not all of them were neglected at all. If fact we have recieved most of them in great condition, they are just mostly standard breds that are unbroken and they would rather put them on the truck than see them in a ditch after a give away - like scruffy ended up.

A few weeks ago - and bec knowme better as purelle I almost turned one away because of recources and time - and got a hysterical call from a woman begging me to take her horse otherwise it would be on a truck to the doggers. And I freaked out. Well sometimes working full time - having kids and ten horses gets a bit much. But I took her and she is a beauty!!! We have already sold her - yay.

ANd to top it off we are taking a give away and a bought STB - bought from another fantastic saving the STB and all other horses organisation to the royal Adelaide show. I have decided that I cannot do it all myself and I am hoping to get something going like TREW shortly - and will be seeking guidance from bec with this.

But scruffy I read your story before I even found out that I had got my property and before this story I had visions of one horse and me at all royals - I thought that I would have to pay thousands.

But your story has given at least five horses a home rather than the nasty alternative. And two of these "unwanted" scruffies are now royal material.

HoweverI must state that both these horses wer very loved and given up in great condition to a better alternative. It is not always the case.

You are their angel as I never would have thought about it without you. Now I have two royal show qualifiers, and did not have to spend thousands, and you have already saved five lives.

Onya scruffy. Thanks from mighty miss jin and ee pee princess  - check them out at the Adelaide royal show - oh and both their past owners will be there cheering their girls on.

They are both great people and are totally stoked that their girls are doing so well.

Thanks scruffy - without you I would never have met my girls, and their owners now know and will spead the news about TREW, Saltbush lodge and others.

And thankyou bec,,,,, you truley are an angel.

Dear Rebecca: First I want to thank you for what you have done for "Scruffy" and other horses who suffer the same fate. I have seen it over and over and when we can get some "teeth" in the law worldwide it will hopefully make a difference. I pray for Scruffy and hope he is in a better place along with my 29 year old spoiled boy "Harlan" who was humanely euthanised recently. I will keep in touch and see what I can do to help going forward. Keep up your amazing work and we will continue to remind people of the words of Gandhi.

Sincerely,
Ann Stutsbury - Toronto, Canada

Hi Bec,  I am 70yrs old and I am an animal lover for as long as I can remember and this story of Scruffy reminds me of countless other stories over my life but Scruffy's has made me as angry as hell. When is this going to stop.  I think the only way to stop this cruelty is to get on to Government and make the punishment for this type of mindless ownership of any animal much much harsher and give the R.S.P.C.A. some very sharp teeth to be able to get in and take these animals away from these people and stop them ever again owning one.  The laws are too much on the side of the people who own these poor creatures.  I have been looking at all the e.mails on your site and with all the people out there surely we can get together and look at the laws related to cruelty to animals and write to all our politicians that we want something done now.  The R.S.P.C.A have been trying to do this for many years but they do not get any support, or not enough and they are well aware of what is going on but they are tied by the stupid laws.  We need to put submissions and let the politicians, both Federal and State know that we have had enough of this treatment of our animals. Any takers. I would help wholeheartely. Sheila

I read Scruffy's page over an hour ago and I still can't stop crying. Scruffy, if only one of us had known we would have all been there to help, I'm so sorry that we didn't.

Thank you to Rebecca & all of her angels for saving you from suffering any longer.

I too have had to rescue horses that have been 'forgotten', 'become to much hassle' and some that were just blatently abused.

I don't know if my tears will ever stop but I know that my determination to stop the same happening to any other 'Scruffys' out there will never wane.

Please everyone, make it your mission to keep an eye out for the horse population in your area, approach owners (cautiously) if you have concerns about their horses, even offer to help if you can. These proud & noble creatures deserve all the love, kindness & caring they can get.

Hi Bec What a horiffic story.  THe pictures are traumatising and yet they really don't capture the true essense of the condition or state of Scruffy do they.

I adopted an aged pony stallion from a "RESCUE" centre here in QLD.   I am sorry to say I trusted in the RESCUE Centres knowledge and had the poor bugger transported with out a vet check.   He made it as far as Caliope, my mums place where atleast he was loved for his final hours.  He died less than 48 hours after arriving.

Described as "a bit poor"  my poor boy was not poor he was emaciated.

Good on you for Fighting for horses like scruffy.  Thank you for posting such Brutal Pictures.  Maybe it will shock people into action.

Darling Scruffy,

What you endured will never be forgotton.  You will forever be remembered as an incredibly brave soul.

I just wish you found your way into my life or one of the many others here that have a heart before you had to go through the pain and suffering you did.

On behalf of all mankind,  I am so sorry for what you went through.

To further bring life from your death, I promise with my heart and soul to continue to save other horses..... but now in your memory.

See you in heaven kind soul.  Rest in eternal peace.  The good Lord knows you've earn't it.

Love forever xoxox

Danielle Harvey (Victoria)

Dearest Scruffy,

When I read what happened to you, my heart was broken in two.  I am so very sorry that you had to endure such incredible suffering at the hands of such ignorant and uncaring people. I wish I could have helped you.

Now off you go beautiful boy,  run and play with the other horses in the lush fields of horse heaven and never look back.

We will stay behind, for a while, and remember you always.

Jan Willey

I am so saddened and ashamed that anyone could allow such a noble creature to starve in this way.  RIP Scruffy. No one can hurt you anymore.  Robyn

There seems to be  no end to the suffering that these amazing animals must endure. I'm so ashamed to be a human. I will NEVER until my dying day understand how the human race has been allowed to inflict so much suffering on the animals that share our world. Rest in peace Scruffy. A peace that you likely never found in your days here on this messed up planet. I hope you felt the love Rebecca was sending you are your way out.

How can people do that to a horse? After all they do for us! That is just so horrible! Horses do so much for us! Here is a poem I found in a book of mine:

'Look back at our struggle for freedom, trace our present day's strength to its source; and you'll find that man's pathway to glory is strewn with the bones of a horse.' Anonymous

Some people are so cruel - how can they just do that? I'm ashamed to be of a species that so mistreats other species!

o my goodness the owner should be so sad i'm crying there are tears in my eyes and i'm only 9 poor poor poor scuffy he does matter i wish you could of saved the poor thing oh thank you for making a home for all unwanted horses i have my own horse this artical has made me think how to treat my horse and i will go see her every day that poor horse sees me twise a week any way so sorry scruffy love ya.

hi all,

i can remember as a child  during one of the previous droughts being horrified at pictures of brumbies being transported on train cattle trucks to the abbotoirs, and seeing the pictures of the ones that didn't make the journey's end.  I am still angry at the memory... the animals dehydrated and emaciated dead in the corner of the truck, obviously having fallen under the feet of their companions... it makes me want to cry... and i said horses should never go to an abbotior.... BUT.... i now have several different thoughts on things... as hard as i think it is, i would prefer the animal to go to anabbotoirs for a clean, and i emphasise it has to be a clean death, then to starve unwanted and uncared for in a back paddock somewhere.  And that all of us as animal lovers, and horse lovers need to start taking responsibilty for what we are producing.  In something similer to the problem with unwanted kitten's and puppies, perhaps instead of breeding more and more horses, we should be adopting horses, rather then breeding them.  i know some will find this hard to agree with and may even be offended by these thoughts... but i strongly feel that perhaps more thought needs to be given to the numbers of mares bred every year and to what future we give their foals, so that they do not become scruffy's in the future.

Rest in peace to all of those animals who die in such inhuman ways.

best wishes for the new year

Hi Rebecca..

I hope these bastard people get in sooo much trouble for what has happened to this poor old man :'( ,,i am so very proud of you for doing what you could and helping Scruff be at peace....

Rebecca- i also can not for the life of me understand why this horror keeps happening,,try not to let it pull you down too much because the weight of the sadness at times can be too much...

I'm sorry i probaly don't make much sense at the moment as i too am upset and angry and bawling my eyes out.

Take care...

I can not find words to contain the feeling I have right now! Although graphic these picks show the true ending due for all unloved uncared for and unwanted horses out there and makes me proud to have 2 such horse sin my paddock currently!!!! I hope the RSPCA get the mongrels responsible and feel for your friend R.I.P. Scruffy

It brings tears to my eyes seeing the absolute neglect of any animal, this story has made me sick to my stomach. I cannot believe there is any human in the world who would let an animal starve like this, and suffer such a cruel death. I hope these people get whats coming to them, I am a big believer in Karma. Thankyou so much to the lovely police officer who has acted so professionally, and to those who were able to help in some way.

People who are capable of this should not have the pleasure of enjoying the simple things in life like FOOD, water and shelter.

I hope somewhere in their lives, they have to suffer, like poor scruffy did.

RIP Scuffy, im sure you have gone to the "Rainbow Bridge"

Jodie.

What a total disgrace. I feel sick to the stomach. There is simply no excuse. What is wrong with these people?? May they get what they deserve, including public humiliation. RIP finally, Scruffy. Regards, Trina

Hi Bec

OH MY GOSH how can any one in there right mined do this. I can not explian the anger and sadness i fell right now and on top of that i am crying for this poor horse. I am also looking after a neglected horse Myself. (but he is not that neglected as Scruffy was) Bec you are doing the right thing. If i can help in any way just tell me.

Hi Rebecca

I cant believe there are people that would  allow their horse to get to that condition, surely like you said, if they no  longer wanted or could afford their equine “friends” then surely they could so  easily have given it to someone else (for free) and let someone else get many  years of equine friendship with it.  They rate right up there with the  people that advertise their horse for sale saying if it doesn’t go by the  weekend it’s going to the doggers, I just don’t get the mentality of some  people.

I hope the lady gets what is coming to her and hopefully the RSPCA can prosecute, although I know that they do have a LOT of red tape that gets in their way, but all they have to do is see the evidence and hopefully that’ll be enough for  a visit to her property and removal of the other horses. Fingers crossed anyway.

RIP Scruffy, I didn’t know you, but you deserved much better  than you got.

Tanya.

I hope the owner of this horse is going to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This shouldn't happen to any animal. What a disgrace, RIP Scruffy. NM

I am in absolute shock I am sitting here crying at this is the worst story. And to think she has more horses those bullets should be for her. Poor Scruffy now he is at peace.

This should be reported to national TV and the women named publicly.

Thankyou to the kind person who is following this up.

Regards
Julie

It is hard to believe that as horse lovers there are people in  this wourld that would or could inflict such suffering on such a knoble creature...I am so proud of you for taking a stand and bringing this heartbreaking story into the limelight...

We are at the moment in a similar situation trying to save 45 starving horses from certain suffering and death, your story helps us to continue the fight to stamp out this cruelty.... if in the future you or anyone needs help with a similar situation we will gladly stand beside you

Hi Rebecca,

Big hugs for you and your friend. Although it might not make a difference, your friend should at least feel for doing the right thing and ending poor Scruff life, and any further suffering. Maybe ring Project Hope and see if they can get the RSPCA to do anything and god forbid if this woman shoul get away with this. I feel so bad knowing she has others!! If you ever feel like doing a midnight run im there with you all the way! RIP Scruffy.

Regards,

Poor little Scruffy. May his dear soul finally be ale to be at peace. I feel like doing unspeakable things to people that feel it is ok to inflict that kind of pain on a helpless animal.

I hope that something awful happens to that woman and that she never gets a chance to do this to another living animal ever again.

Hat's off to the policeman for being able to help Scruffy in his final hours.

Hi Bec, well I just dont know what to say, and thats something new for me.

Well done for what you did to ease his suffering and your offer of taking in horses is just fantastic. I wish we could but just dont have enough land.

Rest assured I will be refering people to you for help.

Thankyou for helping a needy horse.

No words can describe this horific treatment of an animal... any animal !   Some humans do not deserve to walk this earth, let alone own animals.  Scruffy's pain & suffering is over,  we all need to protect our four legged critters....

That is one of the saddest thigs I have ever seen. How can people let a horse get in this state?

Hi Rebecca,

I have known the woman you are talking about all my life.  Her horses always looked neglected but as you say the RSPCA were aware and seemed to do nothing.  When I saw these photos of beautiful scruffy, I was balling!!  Even I didn't think any human could go this far!  We have picked up a few malnurished horses in our time and each and every 1 of them grew into our gorgeous 'boys'.  It is absoloutly disgusting that someone can go this far!  I will be forwarding your address onto every person I know, the likes of whom are quite high up in the eventing scene.

Hopefully this bitch gets what she deserves - maybe we should starve her for a while and see how she likes it!!!!

Jaimie

Hi Rebecca

Poor Scruffy at least he is at rest and is not suffering anymore.   I hope these people are prosecuted to the full extent of the animal cruelty laws (just a shame the laws are not harsher and then maybe the cases of animal cruelty would drop)  Take care and wish you and your friend the best.

What a tragic waste of a life. At least he will suffer no more. Lets hope that this person is dealt with accordingly before other horses have to suffer like poor Scruffy. RIP Scruffy.

Hello Rebecca,

Thankyou for sending me the link to this page. Personally, if someone is that bloody stupid they can not see the horse is STARVING, they should be the ones with the bullets. So many horses (and other animals) are being neglected because of stupid ignorent morons such as the people above. I live in a town about 15 - 20mins from Nagambie and have an idea of who the owners are.

I would to be able to post pictures of the owners on the internet, it would make them think twice about being so bloody stupid. No words can describe how I feel about this situation with Scuffy or any horse, and I just pray for justice in any way!

Regards, Bronzen Dreams

Dear Rebecca,

The woman who abused Scruffy is well known to us all. She has a history of acquiring animals and abusing them. The RSPCA should have a file on her for past offences. It is beyond my comprehension that such people continue to collect animals and then inflict on them the horrors that were Scruffie’s fate. She needs the bullet not the horse.Good Luck in your efforts.

Leigh

Well, Rebecca.

Were exactly does one start to express there Anger toward people whom allow this sort of pure and absolute neglect toward a helpless animal.

As someone, Whom was unfortunately involved with some people many years back who thought this kind of care of a helpless animal was justified still has me at a loss.

I had been over here in the US and returned to find the same as Scruffy and much worse.

I had no other option as to take charge of a very disgusting situation.

I destroyed over 25 horses as there was no chance of recovery.

I did this not to help those thoughtless mongrel individuals whom were responsible for the animals

But to help the poor starving creatures.

As usual and way to often. These individuals managed to scrawl there way free.

The R.S.P.C.A (sorry I got to laugh at what that name is supposed to stand for). As way too often they would not take immediate action nor help me destroy remove or feed these starving horses

No. This society for the protection of animals said they would check back in a month.

Well, if I had of turned my back on those animals as quick as they did for a month and allowed these so called horse people take charge again there would have been 60 dead or dying horses on this property.

So all you people who have had your heart strings tugged just a little start doing something positive about this. Help all horses in similar situations as scruffy by contacting the R.S.P.C.A

Daily

And Don't Stop. If enough people put in writing and in phone calls to the local Bendigo office they will have to do something.

The knowledge I have is if enough people complain then there is action taken.

God help the rest of the starving horses and thank you Rebecca for your great task in trying to save at least some of those poor horses that people just ? ( no one word can explain) them.

I run a professional showjumping barn in California. And have been here for the past 10 years.

If I can help you find contacts or anything, I will be happy to call on the names of many people I know back there in Australia.

Thank you

I Hope that these people get their just rewards!!! these people are very devoid of anything that l could respect as a reason for the condition of scruffy

rip scruffy now over the rainbow bridge fat & black with grass knee high to eat sleep & roll in

I am trully saddened by this treatment of such a beautiful animal.  Over the weekend we had a horse die at our place of agistment and when we took her rugs off we noticed that she had literally starved to death and it was too late for us to do anything about it.  It is a day I will not forget- looking at a skeleton of where a horse should be.

I'm so glad that at the end he met someone who truly cared for his plight - even if it was just to give him the courtesy of a quick end.

People who treat animals like this should be made to live under the human equivalent of these circumstances. They need to understand what it really is that they're doing. At the very least they need to be helped psychologically, as they're very obviously missing the empathy they should have been born with.

I would also like to commend you for offering to help other horses in similar situations - there's not many of us in a position to be able to do that, which is unfortunate for the amount of horses needing help. Good for you!

I wanna go hug my horse now and give him an extra scoop of his feed mix - although luckily - he doesn't need it.

Jill

im so so sorry to hear about scruffy the poor little darling ......  :(

i hope that the barstads are gona pay for putting this poor horse through hell....

i thank you for what you  done for this horse

R.I.P Scuffy, you deserved SO MUCH MORE :(

I own three horses and two of which were give away. One was in quite good condition as the trainer cared what happened to him. The other other one not so and I rescued her and found her a home with someone who assured me that they would take care of her. I had done up a lease just incase and have recently found out that "She is hard work and is too much time" for this person so now I am going to take her home and she will stay with me where she will be loved and cared for as she deserves this.

If only the laws were tougher on the selfish b*stards who abuse their privilege of owning animals. Until the laws toughen animal abuse will still be quite common :(

i hope the people get starved and so they no how he hells i got horses and i could not do it if i did i will give you permition to shot me

Are they plaits in Scruffys mane? That's absolutely disgraceful! I hope Karma gets that stupid **** in the ass , hard!

I CANT SEE THE COMPUTER THROUGH THE TEARS, I AM SOBBING. THANKS FOR FOLLOWING UP ON THIS HORRIFIC SITUATION, ITS A PITY THERE IS NOT MORE OF YOU.

AFTER SUCH A SAD LIFE YOU HAVE MADE SCRUFFY A VERY IMPORTANT PONY LOVED BY MANY. AT LEAST NOW HE IS SUFFERING NO MORE. TIME FOR OWNERS LIKE THIS ALL OVER TO SUFFER. LOVELY OFFER FOR OTHER HORSES, MAYBE WOULD BE GOOD TO HAVE PLACE TO LOCK PEOPLE WHO HAVE MISTREATED THEIR ANIMALS AND MAKE THEM SUFFER, I'LL RUN IT...  THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN FOR A HEART BREAKING STORY COVERED SO COMPASSIONATELY.

dear bec,

I cannot tell you how saddened and angry i feel right now. I Do not know how people could do this to animals, how can they sit back and feel nothing for a living thing that is wasting away? To the people who can..I hope you feel totally disgusted in yourself. These people are selfish and care for nothing but  themselves!!!

I definetly DO NOT approve of this cruelty and i will fight with you bec!

A part of me does feel happy though because  If there is anyone that will fight to the end it is you rebbecca!

If i can be of any assistance please dont not hesitate to ask me i am only a phone call away!

Scruffy may you cross the rainbow bridge and eat all the lush green grass you can.

(you deserved soo much better)

Rebecca and friend,

Thank you for doing everything you have done, and can do, in this awful situation. I hope and pray that the owner of poor Scruffy gets everything she deserves tenfold. It is sick and sad and makes me ashamed to be a human being. RIP Scruffy, he will be in a much, much better place now.

I always wondered why they felt it necessary to leave the "e" off the end of the word human and create a brand new word that means:

1. Characterized by kindness, mercy, or compassion.

2. Marked by an emphasis on humanistic values and concerns.

Now I understand....

Yet again, man has let one of our four-footed friends down.  Makes you wonder why they would ever really trust us.

RIP Scruffy.  You deserved better and didn't get it.  May the people who did this to you rot in hell.

Dear Rebecca

you and your friend are Scruffy's angles. I do volunteer for a horse welfare group ( you know who it is) and what you have done is admirable and kind. I know first hand what it is you have and are going through but remember this, Scruffy is resting in the grassy patch called 'horsey heaven' eating all he has missed out on for so long and saying thank you. Can't imagine what would of happened to him in Mildura. If there is ever the chance to stick the knife in and twist it, now is the time. Put these people in the same ditch Scruffy had to lie in all night with 3 bullets in their head. I can tell you this no-one would be sad that people like this are out of our world.

DON'T GIVE UP, FIGHT IT TO THE END.

Renee

I have 'stolen' 4 horses like Scruffy.

My RSPCA fella told me to go get them if I could.....then he'd talk to the people.

The 4 horses had a chance once they were taken away from the FREAKS OF NATURE that owned them.

Dear Bec,

I am constantly amazed at what people will do to a horse or any other animal

for that matter.

I have in the past rescued many horses from starvation and they have always

become fantastic animals. I wish people would get over their pride and ask

for help, when they dont have feed or the means to purchase it. But this is

just plain cruelty.

Luke was just like this when I purchased him. He wasnt 27 though, he was

2!!!

He should have been in the prime of his life..he was skin and bone and lice

and worms, and cuts and infected sores, deformed hooves, torn ear, and pussy

eyes etc etc.

I reported that "lady" to the rspca...nothing happened....I reported the vet

to the AVA still nothing happened..."a little underweight due to the

drought" his words still ring in my ears.

He lay in his yard for three days, as he couldnt stand up for longer than

about an hour. I am amazed that he didnt die on the truck on the way from

Goulburn NSW to the Yarra Valley in Victoria. The truck driver told me of

the conditions of the property and other horses that were

there...disgusting.

Horsewyze magazine did a story on him...after he won his first championship

sash. There were before and after pictures.

I have heard that she got rid of him because he was never going to be any

good...well he is a national champion, and last weekend won three out of

five of his ridden classes and came second in halter. Now there are plenty

of scruffy's and luke's out there. They just need love and attention and

feed and someone to believe in them. The RSPCA need to employ more people

who are keen to save animals and less people to ring up looking for money.

They have millions in their coffers.

They are supposed to be concerned and follow up on all calls...and when they

get a case like this, they should publicise it to the max. The owner should

be starved for at least six months, and then left to die on the side of the

road begging for mercy... until someone walks up and plants a bullet in her

head.

well it was good enough for the horse wasnt it?

Bev

Dear Rebecca,

I respect immensely your decision to take control and help horses in need of love and care.

I myself paid extreme money for a thoroughbred mare who was starved with hardly no coat to keep her warm in a freezing winter because I could not bare to see her suffer like this. Taking care of her and helping her start a brand new healthy life led me to have a keen interest in rescuing starved and abused horses.

I reward you for you courage and your heart in helping poor Scruffy. You are to be congratulated.

Taiya

Dear Rebecca, its a good (albeit sad) thing your doing.  Sorrow, that is the only word that comes to me now, that poor poor animal and so sad that ive seen it before, I myself rescued a "scruffy"  didnt know what she was, this pitiful creature, all angles and hollows, infections and sores, where to begin?? I prayed that she'd survive the just over an hour trip home then with veterinary advice weaned her onto food!!! Can you imagine being weaned onto food, the reality was this horse had been living on nothing and sudden feeding might finish her off.  But here we are 3 years later and ive got myself a big black glossy QH mare worthy of the showring, it can be done, please look out for these poor animals, and dont be afraid to speak up, they cant, and like I did, just plain steal them if you cant find another way, you'll actually have legal support!!!! R.I.P Scruffy, our thoughts are now with you.

it is wonderful to know they are some caring people around like yourself. your story was very touching. It is such a pitty how someone could to that to such a beutiful horse. Its horrible to know what people could do to their animals.

once again i am so glad to know that there are some people who really DO care

I am at a loss for words and can not see the keyboard for the tears in my eyes, how anyone can do that to an animal is beyond me

R.I.P Scruffy gallop across the skye you are free now from all the pain and suffering that the two leggers has put you though

Rebecca,

Thank you so much for publicising Scruffy's plight.  As hard as it is to read his story and see the photos it sometimes takes an experience this shocking to remind the horse community that this sort of thing does happen and that we all need to be vigilant and prepared to take action when it is needed. If the messages from all the good people on this page are anything to go by then Scruffy's sad life was not wasted.  God bless you and yours Rebecca for being there to see him safely over the Bridge.  I'm sure He would have been given a VIP entry straight to the best pasture.

I will contact you personally with my details in case I can be of any help in some way.

best wishes,

Tracie Grimwood

R.I.P Scruffy. This site proves that there are wonderful people out there that DO care about what happens to horses, and makes me all the more determined to follow through with my dream of starting a horse rescue facility in my area to help the horses that i have seen who are well on their way to similar fate of starvation and neglect. That there is so much support out there is encouraging, as it is such a costly and daunting thing to undertake.

So rest assured Scruffy, although you suffered to your last breath, and none of us would wish that upon any horse, your death, albeit under abhorrent circumstances, will not have been in vain!

Dear Rebecca, I am crying as I write - like so many posters on here. I recently helped two horses find a new home, who were neglected and about to be shot.  They are both wonderful animals - one of them is an aged ex-champion hack.

None of us will ever understand the mentality of the people that do this - their stupidity, their selfishness, their cruelty. I hope if they have children they don't also  treat them the same way. The ONLY thing that can stop people like this is rigorous enforcement and prosecution for any abuse or neglect.

I hope that this woman is finally stopped from owning any animals ever again, and that she cops a punishment that will mean something to her. Obviously her animals are not of any importance - losing them might not be any punishment . Lots of money might though!

Cate Hutchinson

I am at a loss for what to say that hasnt already been said by everyone who thinks the way this horse was treated in his life was worse than despicable and RIGHTLY SO - THERE IS NO EXCUSE.

So I am going to give up trying to SAY and instead DO stuff, firstly this note to say RIP SCRUFFY you deserve it.

Then I am going directly to our website to ad a link to this page for others to see what happens if a horse is neglected and hope that all who sees this will take note.

Thirdly I am a member and moderator of a relatively new forum http://www.forumsvibe.com/qldhorseriders/ where we invite you to post a topic about scruffy for all to see and hopefully learn the lesson without ever putting a horse through the needless and cruel neglect and final injustice that was scruffy's.

Thoughts are with you and all the horse who still need help. Regards Josie - Stretchs Horseworks - www.freewebs.com/stretchshorseworks/

Its difficult to understand how anyone who takes on the responsibility of horse ownership can let this happen.....it must have taken months for Scruffy to get like he did...what is wrong with people!!

Whats the old saying...the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man....

It really makes you realise how black and cruel some men/women really must be on the inside  to witness this suffering and not to give a damn.

Hope they get whats coming to them....yes I believe  in Karma too.

Sheryl Ferry

My whole body is shivering with anger at reading this story - thank you for helping poor Scruffy in his final moments, and allowing him to pass with some degree of dignity (if you can call it that) rather than suffering for hours and hours more.  I am sure he was thankful to be put out of his misery in a humane manner.  I certainly want my group to be involved in this, as that is what we set the group up for.

Run free, Scruffy, you will not be forgotten.

Von, Clydesdale Rescue

LEST WE FORGET!!!!!!

No animial desereves to suffer like scuffy appeares of had to they ask so little of us just some love food water and attention four simple things, the owners should never never be aloud another living thing , It people like you rebecca that makes me think there got to be some one fighting for these poor defensless animals

hi rebecca i have just finished reading your article on scruffy. It saddens me to think that there are people out there like that. I to have been a witness to something similar many years ago, and through my intervention the horse didn't get to that stage of dear scruffy. i don't have any more to say everyone  who has voiced their say  in this forum i totally agree with.

RIP SCRUFFY

RUTH

Dear Rebecca,

as many before me I have shed a thousand tears for your story on Scruffy.  First I would like to congratulate you your friend and the policeman that were involved in this tragic story, it must have been heart wrenching for all involved to do what had to be done, at least now the suffering and pain is over for this poor, poor horse.                       To dear Scruffy  how any one could be so cruel to you at a time in your life when you needed all the love and care that you deserved atfer being on this earth for twenty seven years, you were worth more than that and I hang my head in shame. But at some point in your life I hope that you knew in your heart that not all humans are like this women that neglected you so badly. Rest peacfully now old man and may the wind be in your face as you gallop along on your now pain free journey.

To the lady that owned this beautiful horse I wish right at this very moment that you lived near me...............  To the son that left him on the side of the highway, my god I won't write on here what I think about you and your mother!

Keep up the good work Rebecca the world needs more people like you and I no that they are out there. Lets all hope that the RSPCA can do something more to end the suffering of all neglected animals, they truely don't deserve it. Debbie     Tasmania

Thankyou Rebecca for being brave enough to get involved and help poor Scruffy, albeit if only to end his suffering. I cannot begin to inagine how someone could allow this to happen to ANY horse or pony, yet we all know it goes on. Everyone who cares MUST get behind this and put a stop to this appalling behaviour. Phone your RSPCA branch daily if you know something! We have one of our own here in Tassie - constant offender! I for one will start phoning!!!

RIP Scruffy - pain no more

Hi Rebecca

You are wasting your time with the RSPCA. They seem to always turn up when it is too late or they send out other agencies to look, who nothing about large animals. We need more people unfortunately like ourselves that go out of their way to help the large animals. Many times I have watched hopelessly as farm animals starve to death and the RSPCA are to busy. What are they being payed for? Too make money or look after animals. My heart goes out to all the negelected animals and my heart bleeds for Scruffy he deserved to have died with diginity not in a gutter. I have a 30 year old horse yes he looks old but he is well loved and yes he needs specially care because of his age but he will never suffer liked Scruffy did. Good Luck Rebbecca If I can help save a horse in the Western district donot hesitate to contact me. Sue

Hi Rebecca,

Words cannot describe.  I am heartbroken.

Thank you for letting us all know, I am just at a loss for words now.

I have also helped save a horse who was starving to death, and thankfully now she is very much healthy and happy.  I shall give her extra kisses, cuddles and carrots today.

She is my "scruffy" who fortunately lived.  I shall shed many tears for this "Scruffy"who didn't

Rachael

Wow Rebecca,

You and your "associates" are to be highly commended - the bravery and commonsense you have all shown is outstanding.  Thankyou for posting this forum and bringing this to our attention.  I, along with many others, am mortified at the treatment this poor fella had to endure.  Makes me ashamed of our race!  I'm glad you had the guts to not let it rest & also for the support you are receiving in this quest.

Allofus, Tasmania

Hi Rebecca

What courage you and your friend have.

A lot of us can learn a lot from your courage, grace and determintation.

Scruffy must have been one hell of a horse to put up with so much and still make it so far.

Hopefully his plight reaches those that deserve it most his owner and other like him/her as there seem to be so many out there. That forums scrub this sort of awareness is simply disgusting.

Humans are definitely are the worst kind sometimes and that they can live with them selves hurting others animals and humans alike around them disgusts me no end.

RIP in peace beautiful boy through you many others will be helped.

Thankyou Rebecca for bringing this to our attention and giving us the opportunity to also grieve for this poor boy.

I am so appalled by the state that poor Scruffy was in and the fact they tried to float him like that, my god that poor horse!  Looking at the photos, reading those poems, I have been bawling my eyes out and like most of us, wished we had the opportunity to give Scruffy the life he so deserved.  This is just one of many sad stories unfortunately and I too hope that Scruffy's story helps out many other poor horses in similiar situations.  His legacy WILL live on Rebecca through all your efforts and please do not be disheartened by other people more worried about themselves and being sued rather than doing the right thing, I applaud you for all your efforts!!  Also I think your friend and the police officer did the most humane thing as distressing as it was.  THANK YOU for sharing Scruffys story Rebecca and keep going girl!!  I too have been put in a position twice to call the RSPCA and one was on a horse in Scruffys condition, we cannot turn a blind eye to such neglect, people who do this MUST be held accountable!!  Thank god Scruffy found love and compassion before he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.  May he be frolicking and enjoying life as it should be now.

Kindest regards,

Bec,

I feel that the more that we are exposed to this, the more there is out there.. Not just horses but every domesticated animal.. People who do this to animals should have the same inflicted on them.  I remember a story about a guy, who dragged a kitten along the road while he was DRIVING!!! Where do these people come from?  the problem is that the authorities don't do a thing.. They take excuses "oh i cant catch him to feed him" and they accept these excuses as plausable???  I hope that your war will be successful and wont tear you up like its has obviously torn TRUE animal lovers of australia!  Good luck! you have the support of a lot of people.

regards,

Bel, Zacheus, and Millie

RIP Scruffy... this sad tale has brought tears to my eyes and anguish to my heart... such a shame that the biggest kindness he was ever shown was at his end... and what a kindness that was, poor soul...

Run free Scruffy - make all your paddocks be lush from now on!

I hope too that the person responsible for this crime are dealt justice and maybe, just maybe, they might feel true shame - enough to prevent it ever happening again!

HI Rebecca.........I applaud you on your efforts to give poor Scruffy his diginity.......how any person could/can allow any animal to live in such torture I will never understand.......may you now be running in lush fields Scruffy over the Rainbow bridge......

I sincerely hope that this woman is prosecuted to the full extent of the law and is denied the right to own any more horses or indeed any animals for the rest of her life..........

What a little beautiful boy!

My heart goes out to you scruffy and my tears roll down my face, even not knowing you.

Your owner should rot in hell, while you being the beautiful creature you are REST IN PEACE.

I am so sorry that you had to endure a tough life like you did, NO horse or animal should have to life such a cruel life.

Hi Rebecca

Why are the RSPCA dragging their feet????

Why are you getting so much flack from people???You are doing a great job ignore all the critism. If you only save a few horses by having you web site then Scruffy didn't die for nothing he left a legacy and started people discussing Why are people so cruel???  You have also listed many good resources for people to get help That should  had happened years ago. I wish you all the luck in the world.

There is a few people who are stupid to believe that Scruffy was just old. Not even in old age he should have suffered He should have been under veterinary care.

Best of Luck and I look forward to hearing that the owner has been made to pay for what they have done. Sue

May Scruffy finally have peace. This shows how dispicable humans can be. I hope the owners are given the full force of the law and they are made an example of. How disgusting they are and the audacity of trying to justlfy their actions. It sickens me and there is no need for it to happen. What a disgracful position for your friends to be put in too.

Scruffy I never knew you but please forgive us for being so horrible to you. May you find peace and the joy of running free in heaven, in all your beauty and glory.

Dear Bec,

The saddest epilogue to this story is that the truth is that there are many more 'scruffys' in this country. I know this as I live close to a knackery.

I watch the parade of poor forgotten souls that some heartless owner/breeder has made a few bucks from, by sending through the local sales.

Horses that are heave in foal, or injured, the forgotten kids pony crippled with founder or those that just can't run fast enough. And then there are those that are so battle scared from human abuse; with so much mental baggage they are unreachable.

I use to hate the knackery owner, for what he did and what he stood for in the scheme of the equine world.

But then I watched...horses that had reached the end of their trail be given one last chance to be just horses. Those that are obviously in pain/ injured are immediately destroyed. But the rest, they get one last wish- to run as a herd on a few hundred acres, drink from the dams, play sleep.... be horses. I hope that short time gives them some peace when they reach the end of their final trail.

My wish would be that such a place didn't need to exist at all, but for that to happen we humans need to learn that any life should be treated with respect...and loved.

That is discusting, that poor horse. I hope Scruffy knows that people love him, even if it was after his death.

Hi. I 've just read scruffys story, and just stopped crying.  A bit concerned about the other horse the person owns??? I really hope that the owner of scruffy has had ALL other animals taken away and made safe. How bloody rude that someone thinks that this kind of treatment is OK? They are an insult to the human race. Good for you Rebecca, keep your spirit going mate, SG Ludlow Park

Hey Bec,

I think that this story is sad... i dont think that any horse should have to suffer like Scruffy did. Like even just. Not riding is bad, but to starve a horse. If i ever meet the people who owned him i will kill them coz then maybe, just maybe they will see that what they did is not fair at all!...( i wouldnt really kill them). Anyway i hope that everything turns out and that no one gets the blame for it when they were not responsible.

I would just like to say that reading that story about Scruffy really touched my heart, and made me realise what horrible people there are out there!!!!  NO HORSE, or ANIMAL for that fact, should ever have to go through that pain and suffering.  When I recieved my new horse, he was in a bad way, and i hate to imagine what would have become of him if he did not enter my life, because each and every horse is unique, and my horse is the love of my life, and i am deeply devestated that Scruffy didn't recieve the Love, Feed and Good Life that he was entitled to!!!!  My thoughts and tears go out to you scruffy, and any other horses out there in the same way!!!

Poor, poor Scruff. May you run in greener pastures, boy. And may the people who did that to you never be able to touch another horse again.

Just read about poor old scruffy, you did the right thing. My heart goes out to him.Unfortunatly there are many more like him out there. I drive for a living and see scruffies far to often.I have my own collection of abused horses and they all turned out to be wonderful horses in the end.One was a 26 year old gray bag of bones with bad wave mouth and 4 missing molars on her top jaw.The vet said I was mad to try to save her as she will probably die.Well she did,nt .IT took 4 months to bring her back and now she bosses the other horses around and thinks she is 5 years old again. She is 29 now and still going strong. She was abandond when she needed help and I am very proud of my old gray granny!I have a dogger not far from my home. His property is always full of horses but he will sell you a horse cheaply . He had a few truck loads of drought horses from out west. IT was heartbreaking to see so many skeletons standing there waiting for the end. Some fell down and had to be destroyed as the knackery will not have them if they cannot walk into the kill box.A few came home with me, one a piebald 6 year old mare and a 14 year old palomino mare who are my best girls.Scruffy I would taken you home in a flash if I would have known to play with my guys and live out your life loved and pamperd. RIP little man because there are people who do care.AS for the scum who done this to you I would like their face to meet my steel capt safty boot at high speed.Scruffy if you see a gray arab called Cookie over the rainbow bridge tell him I miss him and still love him. God bless, you did not die in vane.

What a poor boy! There is no exuse for how thin that poor boy was, i my self have had a thin horse (due to ingery he lost a lot of wieght and he is 27) But for the past six months i have worked long and hard to get the wieght back on him and all is going well. My dads g/f had the balls to say to me that people would call the rspca on me but you could see the horse was healthy due to a shiny coat etc.  Any how that is not my point, my point is that even though i have two kids my hubbys was not working so we had little money i still managed to look after my thin horse and get the wieght back on despite his age.  Thank you for caring so much to open peoples eyes and for caring for this darling horse!!

Dear Rebecca

It takes a gutsy person to afront others of the reality of what human beings are capable of.

May I encourage you to take this one step further and contact either "A Current Affair" and "Today Tonight" with these pictures and really help Scruffy by making sure you reach as many people as possible.  I am sure they will be interested in this because we really do underestimate the power of public opinion.

It is abhorant that the RSPCA calls itself an organisation aimed at the prevention of cruelty to animals.  Not only do they do little to prevent the cruelty, they are often missing in action when it comes to following up on cases of obvious horrific cruelty.

Too many so called horse lovers who are more interested in their own little personal agendas than the animals.  That my friend is why you have been abused.  They know this goes on ... they don't like it but they know.  However, rather than stand up and fight for the welfare of the animal, they're worried that if their hobby is put in a negative light, laws might actually be created to truly enforce the humane treatment of horses.

You go girl.  Remember its not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Respectfully,

A fellow horse and dog lover - not just by name but by action...

There is something about the sight of a fallen horse that strikes one's heart in such a way, even for those who are not particularly a horse lover...the significance of something so sacred, powerful, beautiful, intoxicating as the horse...when a fallen horse is seen overcome by life's obstacles, fallen tears and a jolt to the heart and soul can never be prevented...

- Stephanie M Thorn

i cried when read that. we had a horse like that once we bought because we felt sorry for him. the owners comments to us when we first saw him was that they whernt fedding him because they coulndnt eat him.

i always feed my horses before i eat and i would prefer them to be fat than skinny i couldn never do anything like that to any animal and if any body does i think that they should be starved and see how they like it

I made the mistake of reading Scruffy's story at work.  I had to turn away from my colleagues as I couldn't talk and had tears pouring down my face.   How many times do we have to see and hear stories like this, before we stop thinking that we can do what we like, when we like to animals!  We're supposed to be the most intelligent species on earth but we act like the least intelligent when it comes to dealing with all others.

I am revolted by the circumstances of Scruffy's life and his death.  But worse still, I'm revolted by the response of his owners.  I don't know how they can pretend in any way that this was ok.  How about we put you in a small box, we won't feed you, we won't provide you with water, love, or attention.  And when you fall over having exhausted all your emotional and physical strength, we'll give you a kick for good measure.   You and your type disgust me.

Kim

You are an angel Rebecca and friends, and many more angels needed out there. A truly heartbreaking story, unfortunately these things happen every day - look at our local sale yards, shocking. There are horse lovers and owners and then there are the horse exploiters. If only there was a way to stop these money hungry bastards from owning animals......

Hoping this ends in favour of Scruffy.

With tears, Justine.

I must say I am deeply saddened by such an event. The death of Scruffy is a tragic one and he deserves nothing less than honor. The neglect towards him is sickening.

Scruffy, rest in peace. You did not deserve this treatment and death but in death I really do hope you find peace. Rest in peace, boy, rest in peace. For you i bow my head. You are loved.

Well, to keep thi s short and to the point, I must just say that I echo pretty much EVERY comment and feeling already posted. However, I will simply add this.

I am a great believer in what goes around comes around, and the person/people responsible for the way in which scruffy suffered will get the commupence they truly deserve, if not in this life then surely in the next. I just hope that it is in this one, that they might know what it's for.

Rebecca, Kindred spirit....

I sit here shaking and crying and somehow feeling guilty for not being able to help poor Scruffy, not a logical sentiment but it seems there is little logic in any of this.  I am continually shocked to the centre of my being at the acts that can and still are bestowed on our four legged friends, and I too on many days have despised being part of the human race.

I hope this poor horse is somehow on some level of understanding where his spirit lies that his death was not in vain, that there are lessons to be learnt from the misery, pain and sheer lack of love in his life, that those who are responsible will be subjected to returning to this world as a lesser species....  but just as assuredly, they will NEVER be good enough to return as a Horse.

I will post on your other page, Rebecca, and help you in any way I can.  My own land is small, with my own troubled and rescued horses taking their place on it for as long as they live, but rest assured if ther is ever any room for another, or another, and another, they will live out their lives in a better place....

Oh how I wish I had known Scruffy.

I still cant stop shaking.

Hi.I am so glad you and your friend were there for scruffy in his last hour.I cannot beleive people can let there horses get to this.Oh how i would love to starve and neglect them.May Scruffy be running free with all his horsey mates in horsey heaven, having the time of his life and endless long green grass.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.      R.I.P SCRUFFY    YOU ARE IN A BETTER PLACE.

Hey, That is one of the saddest stories i have ever heard. I don't even know how to explain to anybody the state that Scruffy was in. I only have one horse, he never looses weight regardless on what I feed him and to see how underweight this horse was is just horrifying. I would rather starve myself then ever let my boy starve. I wish scruffy had a better life. My mother and myself are now looking at neglected horses to take in, only around one at a time to look after aswell because we hate to see horses like this. I am the only horsey person in my family but i would love to look after neglected horses because i cannot stand seeing horses that are starving and not even living like a horse should.

Omg!I have dry reached the whole way through reading this unbelievable act of cruelty! With tears streaming down my face,I write this,to the barstard who did this KARMA will get you,& I hope you rot in hell you low life scumbag!!I can only hope that one day your life is full of suffering & pain!Words cannot even describe how angry I am after reading about poor Scruffy.May you rest in peace, darling man, forever roam the greenest pastures with no pain or suffering.oxoxomy thoughts and prayers are with you, from Kym & Charm oxoxo

I can only admire your persistence in forcing the perpetrators of this horror to face up to their neglect and abuse.  It's also about time the authorities got off their collective backsides and actually did something about these cases, rather than just pontificating about them (as they are current with the neglected Tolmie horses).  Unfortunately, this sort of neglect and abuse is all too common, and with drought hitting hard everywhere, it will only get worse.   We must all be vigilant and try to do our bit to either report these situations, or if we can, do something to relieve the horse's suffering.  Scruffy and all the nameless horses who have suffered his fate should never, ever be allowed to be forgotten.

hello,im sarah pearce and i was sooooo upset to see those pics of scrufy;( cant beileve anyone cud do tht to a horse ;( we r lucky to have people like u in our world i h8 ppl tht abuse ur stave or slaughter horses i HATE IT!!!! plz put this comment on scruffys page and beileve me i brought a horse for less than 1000 dollars b cos the owner hated the poor little darlingsad but now hes so good i wish scruffy had a 2nd chance with u but i guess tht he was suffering sad i give u my symathy and i will dram of scruffy tonight a hope tht he is in a happier place in heaven thanx sarah!

We found your page very sad and dishearted of man kind .Anyone who would allow an animal to suffer such a death I find a disgrace. People   who own horses stand up and be counted for the sake of SCRUFFY, a noble old fellow gone to a better place  It just makes me want to cry, to think that this horse was not loved or cared for as he should have been . With the best wishes for SCRUFFY  Pat Harris A lover of fine animals as they all are

Dear Rebecca,

I have just by accident found your website, and read about Scruffy.  I sit here, tears running down my face, feeling so ashamed to be part of a human race that treats animals like that, and we say we are civilized!!!

The fact that the owners and others are making life difficult for you, only shows me that they know they are wrong and know what they have done is despicable.  They truly are the scum of the earth, and like us, they will one day have to face their maker.  Lets hope he treats them somewhat better than they treated Scruffy.

My only comfort is knowing that his spirit now runs free and that he is in Heaven and at peace at last.

Thank you for being so caring, and I look forward to seeing justice done.

Like so many others.  I truly care, and wish so very much that I could have assisted him or others in the life on earth.

kind regards
Rhonda

These situations are all over the world and they dont seem to stop.  Horses are a most beautiful creature that some people have not learned to appreciate.  They are so loyal so forgiving (with the right people) and I do beleive everyone will agree with me that horses have that very special smell that only horses lovers LOVE.  But now I do beleive Scruffy is out of his turmoil and is in that place where we (The Horse Lovers) will see him again.  Godspeed Scruffy and run free from the hand of pain forever....Stephanie (Oklahoma)

Hi everyone i cant belive someone of the human race could do this to a living creature they deserve to be put to rest them selves. it made me sick reading the story about scuffy i just cant understand how people can be so careless!! i would like to thankyou for posting this page for scruffy and let people see that some people out there are so carless thanks from gemma

Oh my god i just can't get over how cruel and selfish anyone can be to treat an animal in that way let alone expect it to travel in that condition, i'm in floods of tears at it all as is most i'm sure who read the story.

makes you realise just how lucky our own horses are in being pampered the way they are. Poor poor Scruffy sucha tragic life to i'm sure a horse that would of never hurt a fly, maybe just in desperation through starvation.

Every animal welfare companies in Austarlia should be onto this and that awful owner locked up for it, how can we stop such things going on??

You did you very best you could for the poor little man and you can never blame yourself for it as hard as it probably is. Someone has finally ended his misrable life before he suffered anymore.

I wish you the best of luck with the case.

I am still crying after reading about Scruffy just now. Thank you for doing this, thank you for your compassion and your humanity. I run my own stud farm called Hallelujah stud and I too have rescued horses that have needed help. We still have one with us. A mare we call Charm. When I took her from her owner she had a fractured skull, was very skinny and had damaged her stifle so badly that she will always walk with a limp all that and she was only about 3 years old. She is part of our family now and she is happy to be alive. She loves to play with our foals and she has a lovely nature. We also have 6 horses in their 20's that will spend the rest of their days being loved and taken care of by us. I would like to say that I am sorry for the mistreatment of our most noble animal the horse, but sorry dosent help Scruffy and many others like him. We all need to do what we can to help ,even if all you can do is make a phone call and alert the right people you are doing something. Rest in peace Scruffy the tears I shed for you are from my heart.  Nessie.H.

Shame on the owner- poor Scruffy- are some people so blind and stupid as not to see what is happening to their horse. Surely one cry for help from the owner would have been answered by a vet or horse person with a heart. I am so saddened by the way people get horses and go out and ride them hard once a week - the reward of having a horse for your best mate is the love, the cuddles, the excited whinny when they see you coming each day,the respect in their eyes. I love my old fellow that I bought from a riding school I will never leave him and will definately give him a dignified and comfortable as possible passing. Horses are a lot of work, but that feeling after a good ride out when you are watching your beautiful, shiny slightly overweight horse in his paddock with his friend eating his hard feed full of vitamins and supplements and a biscuit of hay for dessert, simply cannot be explained to one who does not know it. It is pure heaven, as is the air between a horses ears. I love my Banjo and always will. Tina Brown

I am so upset that this has happened to poor scruffy. My prayers are with him and yourself at seeing what the human race is capable of.

RIP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OXOXOXO KELSI

My Dear Rebecca,

I found my eyes welling with tears at the disgrace and degradation this poor creature was forced to endure due to no fault of his own.

I've often wondered why peopel are allowed to continue with this type of abuse time after time. Why isn't there a licensing board which would allow or disallow people from having animals they cannot properly care for. If they are on the list and have a good rating/standard then they can become carers, if not, no more animals of any type.

I pray we as humans will wake up and give our fourlegged creatures the love and respect they deserve.

I salute you and your friend for your valiant effort. Know in your heart you did the right thing and have been blessed for your efforts.

Continue to walk your talk!!!

Kind Regards,

hi rebecca, hearing scruffy plight made me sick to my stomach and angry how could sum1 do that to such a poor innocent beautiful animal????? they should be shot in  the head themselves for doing this to this poor horse may he r.i.p from jasmine

seeing scruffy treated in this way has broken my heart.

i know i will go home tonight to hug my 20 yr old gelding and be so happy that he has a safe and loving home to end his days in.

my only wish is that all horses could end there days happy and safe in the care of someone who loves them.

may you cross the rainbow bridge and be in eternal peace in a green pasture with a mate beside you scruffy.

Oh Scruffy I'm so sorry you livesd a terrible life. I love horses so much and if i just knew about it I would have done something if I could. Animal cruelty needs to be stopped. But it's too late for you.

Bec,

I read Scuffy's story not long after it happened and I am not sure how many times I have visited Scuffy's page, but I still get the same sick feeling and the tears always flow.

Thank god your 'transporters' having their day in court, I hope the judge is an animal lover and uses this chance to show people that they can't treat animals in this way and get away with it.

If you need support in court Bec, let me know, happy to do it.

RIP Scuffy, your life may be over now but the fight isn't.

wow,:( i don't know what 2 say, i love all animals, but when it comes cruelty i love that certain animal even more because of all the pain and suffering that he/she has gone threw, it makes me really upset, when i see and hear all the horrible things that animals went through, or are going through, all because of some irresponciple "person".

I feel really bad for Scruffy, so i would like 2 say that one day i will remember typing this up and i will (hopefully) save a horse and help many animals.

This really makes me want to go out and become someone who helps animals in a state like Scruffy, forever and ever.

eventhough i dont know Scruffy i still love him, and i know he is alot happier up in heaven running along beside all of his friends and family.

LUV SCRUFFY 4EVER

And to think, the RSPCA spent soooo much money going on and on about tail-docking dogs ( whether you agree with it or not, when compared to stories like this there is no contest!) when horses like scruffy, thirty plus mares at the end of my street and the ones at Lara were dying despite years of complaints.(with no action!)

I have NO faith in the RSPCA, as every call I have ever made has pretty much gone unanswered.

Srcuffy, you made my heart bleed.Rest in peace, beautiful one.

Nikky.

Dear Scruffy,

Whe I read about you, I was shocked. I wish I could've met you, bet that might not've been possible...

Lots of love,

RIP Scruffy, you will live in the hearts of many horse lovers forever.

If only life could have been better for you.

Enjoy the green grass of heaven and know that many people love you.

i feel sick and saddened that people can take lives like scruffy's, and do such awful things with them. in becoming a horse owner, we must understand that it is not much different than becoming a parent. it is a life we take into our own hands, not just a pet. scruffy could not cry like a newborn baby and tell them he was hungry, he could not talk and ask for food or love.

we cannot take lives like this and just ignore them, leaving them to slowly die because we can't be bothered with them anymore.

thank you Bec for giving him that one glimpse of love and kindness before he was taken away from this horrid world

Horses like this deserve pleasure not pain,

When does it stop?

Godspeed, Scruffy.

May your story on these pages inspire people to take action on behalf of those other animals currently at risk of suffering similar fates.  We are their voice.

Run free, good horse.

Rebecca,  The tears are pouring down my face as I read about poor Scruffy.   This woman should be publicly flogged.  We are SUPPOSED to be the intelligent race.  HAH!!!!  BULLSHI*T!!!  I hope she rots in hell.  You and your friend should be awarded a medal for having the guts to put your neck on the line for this poor boy.  I would be proud to know you both.  RIP Scruffy, you had 2 angels to watch over you in the end. Rebecca, you and your friend take care and I hope you realise how much love and support is winging it's way to you from all the REAL horse people.  Debbie Roelfsema NSW.

R.I.P. Scruffy.

I hope the owners of Scruffy never rest in peace.

I am so sad.

You are great people to be doing all this wonderful work with Horses.

Scruffy's story and many others will stay with me forever...

you are free now, you cannot suffer anymore pain and dont you worry justice is being served. RIP Scruffy

Scruffy...I don't know what to say but I am so devestated by your death and you looked so much like my beautiful boy who died recently. I would've done anything you have been able to look after you....gallop in peace may you have much green grass, sunshine and friends.

Rebbecca

I stumbled across your site today and have been in tears all afternoon. The recriminations that issued from my mouth at the way poor Scruffy was treated, i cant seem to put here. Somehow this page is more suited to a gentle dignity that Scruffy never had in his life.  Thankyou for giving Scruffy some comfort in his final time on this earth, my wish for him is that he can somehow know how many people cared - and still care.

Rebecca one thing i know for certain is that by reaching out to him in his final and darkest hour you gave him a gift. When the time arrives you will be the one that will be priveliged enough to escort Scruffy across the rainbow bridge (along with countless others) and spend eternity with him and revel in his beauty and grace as he is finally allowed to be the horse he should have been here. For that i thank you.

My partner and I have just got back into horses. He has never had a horse, I had horses just over nine years ago. We have both got horses and feel guilty if we dont give them a mix at night! We have just bought a 15 acre property and have been talking to council about supplying stables, dog kennels and cat kennels for RSPCA animals as there is no RSPCA in our town. We have been struggling to find a name for our venture but tonight I think I have found it "Scruffys haven rescue centre" I was in tears reading this, and I am hard to make cry- trust me. I am in a job where I see so much heartache, but people can make decisions, walk away, fend for themselves. Animals are at our mercy and helpless. My mum has always jokes that I have always been an animals rescuer. Dont cry, dont feel bad. Put one dollar away for each bale of hay you buy your own horse, and then when you have a full tin, donate it to you local RSPCA. Get your pony club to do raffles, collect cans. Just because you cannot take these animals in yourself, does not make you helpless. Empower yourself, support these causes and make some noise. Remember the noisey wheel gets oiled. Please let me know if you think Scruffy would like to be the St Christopher of all the horses I will take in. RIP Scruffy.

I am very sad to read this story but unfortunately a couple of years ago I came across a pony in very bad condition also. I went to look at this pony to purchase for my daughter the pony was so skinny I would not allow my daughter to ride her. I purchased the pony for $400 only to save her.  When I got her home I immediately gave her some feed and she had to eat it laying down.  After months of feeding and loving her I am very happy to say she is fat, happy and living with a wonderful family who adore her. Let us all save more of these ponies at any cost.  Amanda

i feel stupid being alive seeing all the meen things that people do to animals scruffy looked awful he would of been such a butiful horse if we were not alive

I read your webpage at work and I had to read it in bursts because tears kept welling in my eyes.

I have a horse who is 9 months old and he is my life. I am a vet nurse by trade and I see so often the same thing happening with dogs and cats... no one takes responsibility in this world today.

How can you look at yourself in the mirror and KNOW that your pets are cold or hungry? How can you THINK that this is an acceptable way for a horse to look? How do you sleep at night? People like this don't deserve pets... all I can think is that they have the IQ of a tapeworm (?) Is that a suitable insult - to allow their pet to come to this.

I hope they sleep well at night.

My young fellow, Max, eats before me.... he wears good rugs, is fat as a pig and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm about to leave work now to go and feed Max before I go home, and the first thing I'm going to do is give him a big hug and tell him that I love him.

He doesn't have any understanding anymore of being hungry or cold. He doesn't realise how lucky he was in the horse ownership sweepstakes.....

:(

You are doing fantastic work.... if I had my own place I would be doing the same. I have to make do with one horse and five rescued cats (side effect of vet nursing) I'm not particularly religious but I think that eventually we all get judged....  I take comfort in knowing this.

What goes around comes around.

I hope theres such a thing as reincarnation.

The words that spring to mind right now can't be printed on a public site.... but you all can imagine what they are.

To scruffy's owners....

You are the lowest form of life on earth.

From Liz and Max...

I could not believe my eyes when i saw scruffys page, my girlfriend told me about scruff, This has given me great faith that there is people on this earth that realy do CARE, You girls do a amazing job , Thank-you from the bottom of my heart. xx Nicky K Strathfieldsaye Victoria

It is my aim to one day start up a holistic rehabilitation centre, that focuses on neglected and abused horses. Your sad story has touched me Scruffy. I promise when I succeed in my dream that the greenest clover filled paddock will be named in your honour. To everyone involved with Carinya Park keep up the great work. Thank you for sharing Scruffy's story, it was a very brave and compassionate thing to do. Cass
